About the City of Omro
The city of Omro is located just eight miles outside of Oshkosh, the center of activity in the county. It is also close to the smaller towns of Winneconne, Eureka, and Zion. When French explorers first visited the area now known as Omro, it was Winnebago Indian territory. Eventually, settlers created a trading post in the area. One of the first residents was Charles Omereau, a French blacksmith the city was ultimately named after.
The first modern settler came to Omro in 1847. By 1928, it was a thriving village. It officially became a city in 1944, with a recorded population of 1,401 people. Back in the early days, Omro was a center for county fairs, factories, mills, machine works, and other manufacturing activity. Over time, however, most large manufacturing companies moved to Oshkosh.
Today, Omro continues to experience renewed growth in its population. Projects such as the new Scott Park Pavilion, historic tours, and the designation of the historic downtown district allow Omro to honor its history while making the city a better place to live. If you’re interested in helping the city preserve its history, you can join the Omro Area Historical Society as a resident. The society manages archives and collections of the history of the city, and continues to educate others about the city’s interesting past.
